Mattaponi Springs Golf Club

Mattaponi Springs plays to a course rating of 72.2/ slope rating of 141, from the men’s blue tees playing at 6,403 yards.

This par 72, 18-hole course was designed by Bob Lohmann (former President of the ASGCA and The Merit Club in Illinois) and one of his senior course designers, Mike Benkusky. The course offers 5 sets of tees from professional at over 6,900 yards to recreational at just under 4,900 yards. The clubhouse sits on top of a ridge and gives a beautiful overlook of the 9th and 18th.

About the Hole

Plays as a 421 yard par 4 from the men’s blue tees.

Hole Hacks

The tee shot plays downhill, and the fairway significantly narrows at roughly 240 to 245 off the tee. Longer hitters may consider a fairway wood or utility off the tee to take the water out of play.

Tips & Tricks

There is a large bunker guarding the far-right side of the fairway off the tee.

The right center of the fairway is the optimum position.

Your approach shot will need to carry Polecat Creek which runs down the entire right side of the fairway.

There are no bunkers that guard the green.

The best areas to miss are going to be short middle or short left.

Hole 2

About the Hole

Plays as a 517 yd par-5, dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

This is a very tough test early in your round, and par here is an excellent score.

Tips & Tricks

For longer hitters, you may choose to take a line directly over the 2 bunkers guarding the far right of the fairway. This would put you in an excellent position to possibly reach the green in 2.

For those playing this as a traditional 3 shot Par 5, you can take aim at the bunker that guards the far middle of the fairway.

Left center of the fairway is the optimum position.

For your second shot you will need to stay short or left of the hazard that guards the bottom right of the fairway. This fairway slopes from left to right.

Your third shot for approach plays uphill to a green with no hazards guarding it.

The best area to miss is short middle.

Plays as a 116 yard par 3.

Hole Hacks

This par 3 plays slightly downhill and has a ravine to deal with off the tee.

Tips & Tricks

The front of the green is guarded by 2 bunkers. 1 is located front right and 1 is off the back right.

The best area to miss will be middle left.

About the Hole

Plays as a 470 yard par 4, dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

This hole is listed as the number 3 handicap hole, but if not played correctly, it certainly can play like the number 1. There are no hazards to navigate off the tee.

Tips & Tricks

The left center to the left side of the fairway is the optimum position off the tee. This will provide the best angle for your approach.

There is a ravine that juts out into the right side of the fairway at about 100 to 50 yards from the green. If for any reason you find yourself needing to lay up on this hole, make sure to stay well left at around the 100 to 50 yard marker.

There is 1 bunker that guards the front right of the green.

The best area to miss is going to be front middle to front left.

Hole 5

About the Hole

Plays as a 283 yard par 4 with a slight dogleg left.

Hole Hacks

After a few tough opening holes, this is a great scoring chance.

Tips & Tricks

There is a large bunker that runs the majority of the length of the fairway, down the left hand side.

Right center to right side of this fairway is optimum position off the tee

The green is bunkered by 1 towards the front left and 1 by the front right.

The best area to miss is front middle to middle left.

Plays as a 486 yd straightaway par 5.

Hole Hacks

This tee shot is slightly uphill, and you are not able to see the green from the tee. If you are able to play 3 good shots here, you will have an opportunity for a putt at birdie.

Tips & Tricks

There is 1 bunker in the landing area off the tee to the far right of the fairway that would need to be avoided.

Left center of the fairway is the optimum position off the tee.

There are no hazards to deal with on your second shot or your approach to the green.

If you’re able to keep your ball to the left center or left side of the fairway, you will have the best approach shot possible.

The best area to miss is going to be short of the green, as long here presents a very tough up and down.

Hole 7

Plays as a 181 yard par 3.

Hole Hacks

This green is well bunkered so you will need to make sure you have an accurate tee shot.

Tips & Tricks

There is a small ravine between the tee and the green.

The green is guarded by bunkers on the left-hand side, middle right, and back middle.

The best area to miss is going to be the front middle.

Hole 8

About the Hole

Plays as a 335 yard par 4, slightly uphill with a dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

This hole provides an excellent scoring opportunity as you are closing out your front 9.

Tips & Tricks

For those longer hitters, you may opt to try and carry the bunker complex guarding the right side of the fairway. If you do, make sure to stay inside the tree line with your drive.

For those not able to carry the bunker complex, left center to the left side of the fairway is the optimum position for your approach shot.

There are no bunkers guarding the green, but you do want to make sure to stay to the left. Right of the green presents a tough up and down.

The best area to miss is front middle to front left of the green.

Hole 9

About the Hole

Plays as a 429 yard par 4, with a hard dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

This fairway is severely downhill and just passed the dog leg off the tee. Finishing off your front 9 with a par here is an excellent score.

Tips & Tricks

For those longer hitters you can certainly set yourself up for a short shot into this green, by taking dead aim at the bunker on the right side of the fairway with a fade.

For those not able to carry the bunker on the right-hand side, there is a grouping of trees straightaway to the far left-hand side of the fairway. Keeping it to the right of that grouping of trees is a good line for your tee shot.

There is a creek that runs the entire width of the fairway roughly 20 yards short of the green.

The green is bunkered by 1 back left, and 1 back right.

Best area to miss here is going to be middle left.

Hole 10

About the Hole

Plays as a 339 yard par 4, dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

If you’re able to find the fairway, you will have an excellent opportunity to start your back 9 off with a good score.

Tips & Tricks

For longer hitters, off the tee you can start this down the right side of the fairway with a little fade through the dogleg, and you will be in great shape for your second shot.

For those not able to carry it through the dogleg, you will want to make sure that you’re towards the left center to left side of the fairway for the best approach angle.

There is a fairway bunker that guards the far left-hand side of the fairway, in the landing area of the dogleg right.

There is a bunker by the front left of the green, as well as front right

The best area to miss is going to be short middle.

Hole 11

About the Hole

Plays as a 371 yard par 4, with a split fairway and slight dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

Both the upper left fairway and lower right fairway run out at about 250 yards. For longer hitters, you may consider a fairway wood or utility club off the tee to keep from bringing the hazard into play. The upper-left fairway provides a much wider and easier target off the tee.

Tips & Tricks

Optimum position off the tee would be, left center to the left side of the fairway. This will provide the best angle for your approach shot that is severely uphill to a raised green.

There are no bunkers guarding the green.

The best area to miss is short to middle right.

Hole 12

About the Hole

Plays as a 505 yard par 5.

Hole Hacks

There is a large ravine that runs through the width of the fairway, roughly 260 to 270 yards from the tee.

Tips & Tricks

Longer hitters may choose a fairway wood or utility club off the tee, in order to make sure to stay short of the marsh/hazard.

Left center to the left side of the fairway, is the optimum position to set yourself up for your second shot.

There is a large bunker guarding the right side of the fairway in the landing area for layup shots. You will want to make sure to stay left center to the left side of the fairway for the best angle at the green.

There is 1 small pot bunker that guards the front left of the green.

The best areas to miss are short middle, and short right.

About the Hole

Plays as a 390 yard par 4 with a very slight dogleg right.

Hole Hacks

This hole has a water hazard running down the majority of the right-hand side of the fairway. It is roughly 275 to 280 yards to carry the entire water hazard.

Tips & Tricks

Optimum position off the tee is going to be left center to the left side of the fairway.

The green is guarded by 1 bunker covering from the front left to back left of the green.

The best area to miss is going to be short middle and short right.

Hole 14

Plays as a 210 yard par 3.

Hole Hacks

There is a large marsh area / ravine that extends from the tee to the green. This is a tough par 3 and requires an excellent tee shot to make a good score here.

Tips & Tricks

The green is raised and is a tough up and down from any miss around the green.

The best area to miss is short right, or long middle.

Hole 15

Plays as a 321 yard par 4, with a dogleg left.

Hole Hacks

This hole provides an excellent scoring chance later in your round.

Tips & Tricks

There is a large bunker guarding the left-hand side of the fairway, in the landing area for most players.

Longer hitters can often carry this bunker with little problem. If you are able to carry that bunker, you will set yourself up for a very short approach.

Right center to right side of the fairway is the optimum position for the best angle at your approach.

There are no bunkers guarding the green.

Best miss is going to be short middle to short right

Hole 16

About the Hole

Plays as a 460 yard par 5.

Hole Hacks

This hole plays straightaway off the tee. This is an excellent par 5, and a good scoring chance as you finish out your round.

Tips & Tricks

Right center of the fairway is the optimum position off the tee.

A drive of roughly 250 yards, will leave you right about 215 to 220 yards into the green.

There is 1 bunker guarding the left-hand side of the lay of the area, just short of the water hazard.

If you are laying up, make sure your approach stays right center to right side of the fairway, for the best angle to the green.

There are no bunkers guarding the green, but there is a water hazard that guards the entire right-hand side of the green.

The best area to miss is going to be short middle to short left.

Hole 17

About the Hole

Plays as a 162 yard par 3.

Hole Hacks

There is water running the entire length of the hole down the right-hand side, including the green.

There is a bunker guarding the front and  back left of the green

The best area to miss is going to be short middle.

Hole 18

About the Hole

Plays as a 407 yard par 4, dogleg left.

Hole Hacks

This hole is severely downhill, once you pass the dog leg. Longer hitters will want to take advantage by taking a shorter route to the bottom of the hill.

Tips & Tricks

Longer hitters can take dead aim at the bunker guarding the left side of the fairway. It is roughly 190 yards to carry this bunker. The fairway slopes severely from left to right, and all shots finding this fairway should funnel their way down to the bottom right of the fairway. If you can drive on this line, you will end up with a very short iron into this green.

For those players that would have trouble carrying this bunker on the left, right center to the right side of the fairway is an excellent position.

There is a creek/hazard that runs the width of the fairway, roughly 10 to 15 yards short of the green.

There are no bunkers that guard the green

The best area to miss is going to be middle right.
